In Between Creative Chinese Calligraphy and Innovative Chinese Painting
by Dr Chew Kim Liong
4 Aug (Sat), 2pm - 3.30pm, Patron's Club
Presented in English
 
Join Dr Chew Kim Liong as he traces the evolvement and development of modern calligraphic art from ancient oracular inscriptions and traditional Chinese writing. Dr Chew will also take a close look at Huang Yao's creative pictographic calligraphy, with reference to SAM's exhibition, "Huang Yao Retrospective" (ongoing from 13 July - 2 September).

This lecture by Dr Chew, a visual-arts professor at the National Institute of Education, NTU will also provide a good glimpse at some examples of contemporary calligraphy and painting. You will also get the opportunity to look at some recent innovative Chinese paintings from the speaker's own work, based on his years of experimentation in combining calligraphy and painting, mathematics and art.

Lindy Hopper's Night
by Lindy Hop Ensemble Singapore

3 & 17 August (Fri), 7pm - 8pm : lesson, 8pm - 9pm : dancing, Auditorium
Lesson and dancing : $10. Dancing only : $5. Registration required.
 
It’s time to hop and dance again! Join the Lindy Hop Ensemble for some grooves and moves and have a swinging fun time. Different steps are taught at each lesson. Seasoned dancers can join in for dancing at 8pm. Dress comfortably and be ready for fun. No partners required.

The Lindy Hop Ensemble is Singapore’s hippest and most innovative swing dance group. The Ensemble has the honour of being the first-ever Singapore dance group to perform at the world’s largest Arts Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in UK with a hugely successful two-week run in July 2000.

Istana Art Event
The Istana: On-the-spot Art Competition
5 August (Sun), 8am - 10.30am, The Istana

This Istana Open Day, get creative within the Istana grounds and take part in an on-the-spot art competition. Choose any of these three themes: Istana - Landscape, Istana - Architecture, and Singaporeans at the Istana and let your creativity flow. Selected winning entries will go on display. Don't miss the other programmes, including musical performances and art demonstrations. Enjoy the beautiful Istana landscape and have fun with activities for the whole family!

[ Registration is free, please call 332 3220. All entries must be on official art block to be issued on the actual day. Participants to bring own colouring materials. Category 1: Ages 4-9, Category 2 : Ages 10-16, Category 3: Ages 17 and above. 3 top prizes, 5 Certificates of Distinction and 5 Certificates of Merit will be awarded per category. Selected winning works will remain property of the Istana, which reserves the right to display the art works within the Istana interior as well as selectively reproduce them for card designs. ]

Courtesy of TIME magazine, entry to the museum and its activities will all be free of charge. You can go on a guided tour with our docents or take part in our workshops. Don't miss out on a day of fun and activities for both adults and children. There's no reason to stay home when there's a TIME Open Day at SAM!

Do you have a collection of paintings, pottery, porcelain, jades, antique furniture etc? Fallen in love with works of art and want to collect? Where to begin and what to collect? Join this series and pick up practical pointers on collecting. For both beginners and seasoned collectors Each talk will end with a question and answer session - have your queries on collecting answered.

[ Lu Chisen is an independent art consultant who has worked with museums, collectors, auctioneers and insurance companies in areas such as collecting, valuations, conducting workshops and talks and advising on buying and selling. With more than 20 years of experience in dealing with oriental art and antiques as well as artefacts on Singapore history and Southeast Asian art, his expertise is also sought by contacts abroad in Europe, USA, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.]

The Singapore Writers' Festival is back with a week long celebration of literature! Enjoy a host of interactive activities with a congregation of over 40 international and local literary figures. Programmes include panel discussions, readings, workshops and meet-the-writer sessions. The festival, with the aim of promoting creative writing and appreciation of literature is organised by the National Arts Council with selected programmes supported by the Singapore Art Museum.

All events are free and no registration is required unless otherwise stated. For payment, please send crossed cheque made payable to "National Heritage Board". All payment must reach SAM (Attn: Ms Santha Anthony) 1 week before the date of the event. Please indicate name of participant(s), contact numbers and the event you are registering for on the back of the cheque.
