New school registered per Government Gazette Not. No. 2263 dated 20 Aug 2001: *Centre Stage Arts School  282 River Valley Road Singapore 238324 Supervisor: Ms Alison Elizabeth May Tompkins

About one in four graduands at the convocation ceremony of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Nafa) yesterday is a foreigner. Principal HO Kah Leong said the enrolment of foreign students at the school, mainly from China and Malaysia, had been rapidly rising over the past few years. The percentage of foreign students, who have to pay higher fees, was about 18 per cent ten years ago but has gone up to nearly 28 per cent this year. it is expected to reach 30 per cent next year. Of the 1,300 full-time students in the school, nearly 400 are foreigners. About 250 are Chinese nationals, 90 are Malaysians and about 15 are Indonesians. The others come from Taiwan, Hongkong, Japan, South Korea and Australia. Mr HO explained that the Education Ministry had capped Nafa's foreign student quota at 30 per cent. If the proportion of foreign students topped that benchmark, the ministry's subsidy for the school would be affected. (Straits Times 12 Aug 2001)(23)

Work on the new Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) campus in Bencoolen Street is due to start by the end of the year and Nafa can expect to move in by 2004. Nafa, Singapore's oldest arts school, was set up in 1938 by artist LIM Hak Tai in a bungalow in Geylang. Nafa now has 1,300 full-time students and 170 full-time teaching staff on campuses in Middle road, Short Street and Upper Wilkie Road. (Straits Times 29 Jul 2001) (27)
