    Bad Examples of English Usage

Here are some bad examples of English usage.

Today newspaper - issue of 27 Dec 2002

If there was any doubt that age is catching up on Cantopop veteran Alan Tam (pictures), his Above and Beyond Concert 2002 on Christmas Day would have dispelled it.

Instead of telling us age is not catching up as the writer had intended to do, the writer, in using an inappropriate word - dispelled - has inadvertently said that age is indeed catching up

Lesson learnt: we should be careful with the use of "doubt" so as not to allow doubt to be cast on the meaning of the sentence we make using the word "doubt".
