The Arts - The Substation

       The Substation

The Substation   A Home for The Arts

The Substation is a place dedicated to the research, interaction and practice necessary for the creation of an original, indigenous voice for Singapore's arts and culture.

It provides room for the arts to grow and for young artists to grow to maturity.

It's a small, nimble, free and open space - outside of the official arts institutions.

Since 1990, when it was converted from an old disused PUB power-station, The Substation has seen more than 1000 events for some 300000 people from all walks of life, races and cultures.

It has a 120-seat theatre, a dance studio, two multi-purpose rooms, a cafe, an art shop, a box-office and a garden courtyard for performances and other arts events.

Notes on its history

The Substation idea was introduced in the mid-1980s by KUO Pao Kun, its founder and artistic director until 1995, who saw the possibility of turning an abandoned power substation in Armenian Street into an art centre.

With the help of the Ministry of Community Development and the financial support of the Guinness Brewery, the power substation was resurrected from its ruinous state and ceremonially opened as The Substation in October 1990.(1)
