No escaping that school branding

Article by Jonathan Liautrakul

The disappointment stayed with me throughout my next three years at Millennia Institute, as I struggled to downshift to the slower pace and lackadaisical attitudes of my peers. I missed the motivation that had spurred me to achieve.

With the help of teachers and friends, I was one of the lucky few from my cohort to make it to university.

Hi

Thanks very much for your email.

Here’s our reply:

Question 1. i have a small aquarium with a small flower horn in it. i would like to ask some important questions. what is really the ideal aquarium size suitable for faster growth of a flower horn and how many months wil it take for this fish to attain its full size potential.

Answer: Flower Horns are territorial creatures so they live best alone. Put a fish in a rectangular tank which is at least 2.5 ft long. The tank is sufficiently big to accommodate the fish throughout its life.

If you have two fish (a male and a female), let them share a 4 ft long tank which you divide into two compartments using an acylic (plastic) divider placed in the middle. This is particularly important if you want the fish to spawn. Never remove the plastic divider! Not even if you want them to mate!

The whole process of spawning is quite simple. When a female Flower Horn is at least 6 months old, she may lay hundreds of eggs on the floor or sides of the tank. The eggs now need to be fertilised by the male Flower Horn. Just switch the two fish. Let the male occupy the compartment with the eggs, and let the female occupy the other compartment. The male will hover over the eggs and fan them with his fins over the next two days. He will also fertilise them. On the third day, move the male fish back to his compartment and let the female fish take care of the eggs. Remove all white-coloured eggs as these have not been fertilised and are rotting.

So the female Flower Horn can breed when she is about six months old. Flower Horns take about a year to reach full size, provided you give them good food such as raw shelled prawns (chopped into bite-sized pieces).

Question 2. Lastly, how often do we change the aquarium water is it everyday of weekly.

Answer: Change about one-third of the water in the tank every three days. Replace the water in the entire tank every weekend and add aquarium salt. Scrape the glass walls and floor of the tank with a sponge. Wash the filter system every weekend. It is important to wash the filter thoroughly, especially the long plastic tubes, to avoid fungal problems. The Flower Horn is very susceptible to this type of disease. Once the disease finds its way into the tank, it will be very difficult to get rid of, and the Flower Horn may slowly succumb to it and die within months.

Best regards from Singapore.

RE: Swee Kee Chicken Rice

EMAIL RECEIVED Tue 8/14/2007 3:09 PM

Hi Getforme Singapore,

I have read about the closure of Swee Kee Chicken Rice stall while searching for some information online. I would like to share that I knew that there’s a new chicken rice stall located at Seah Street and the name in Chinese is “Xing Swee Kee Chicken Rice Stall”. I am not sure whether it has any affiliation with the original Swee Kee, but have heard from friends that the taste of the chicken rice is relatively good. The “Da Pao” takeaway packing is also very presentable as it looked very much like bento set. I should say they do make an effort on the packing as compared to many other chicken rice stalls who normally packed the rice in brown paper or styrofoam box.

I have yet to try it personally therefore I am not able to give any comments now. Maybe your team can check it out to see whether the New Swee Kee does taste as good as the old one. Hope the information given here will be helpful to your findings of the lost Swee Kee.

Thank you and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Monthly Tide Update

Hi Rizan

Thanks very much for your email.

I apologise for having missed out on updating the Singapore High and Low Tides section this month.

We have limited manpower and occasionally put off doing some updates in favour of news for our FrontPage section. The High and Low Tides main page, although showing April 2007 tides table, has a link at the top of the table for May 2007. That was why we thought we could delay the updating task by a few days.

I realise however that some visitors need the next month’s tide table — i.e. June 2007 — in order to plan their sea-going activities with their friends. So, today we have fully updated the High and Low Tides section to show May 2007, as well as June 2007 details.

I will endeavour to update our Tides section by the 2nd of each month.

Thanks for visiting Getforme Singapore regularly.

Thank you.

Dear Sir/Madam

I refer to your email query on the above matter.

Students may use highlighters to highlight parts of the comprehension passage in the question paper, however, they should not highlight any part of their answer scripts.

Please let me know if you require further clarification. Thank you.

However, Singapore immigration will deny entry to visitors who have been banned from entry because of offences committed during previous visits.
