Originally
aspiring to race cars, Lucas enrolled into the University
of California's film class after a drag-racing crash sent
him into the hospital, forcing the 18-year-old to rethink
his goals. Lucas' first student short, an award winner
"Look At Life", broke new ground in animation,
revolutionising a type of animation called kinestatis -
doing fast movements over photographs. |
|
His
other short film, "THX 1138:4EB" (Electronic
Labyrinth), took the first prize at the 1967-1968 National
Student Film Festival, earning him a Warner Bros.
scholarship to observe filmmaker, Francis Ford Coppola, at
work on "Finian's Rainbow". Lucas and Coppola
later formed a company together called American Zoetrope.
Their first full-length version of Lucas'
"THX-1138", directed by Lucas, was financed by
Warner Bros. The film was a commercial disappointment but
established itself as a major cult favourite. |
