NEA commissions book on Singapore hawker centres

Smoking ban to be extended to hawker centres, coffeeshops & entertainment outlets

"The ban at hawker centers and coffeeshops will take effect from 1 July 2006, while the ban at entertainment outlets will start on 1 July 2007...

"The smoking ban at coffee shops will come into effect on 1 Jul 06. Smoking will be banned within the indoor refreshment areas (IRA) of coffeeshops. However, coffeeshop operators may designate up to 20% of the seats in their outdoor refreshment area (ORA) as a smoking corner..."

  Chomp Chomp food centre in Serangoon Gardens has closed for a six-month refurbishment under the National Environment Agency's (NEA) Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme. It will reopen in April 2004. The hawker centre, originally known as Serangoon Garden Food Centre, was last upgraded in 1998. (Straits Times 19 Sep 2003 H11)

  Raw fish vendors have to store their wares in a display chiller until the dish is served to the customer. The new law, which came into effect on 1 Nov 2000, requires the 37 hawker stalls and restaurants selling raw fish, or yu sheng, to install a chiller if they do not already have one approved by the Ministry of the Environment (ENV).
