Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has divorced his second wife, former flight stewardess Mariam Abdul Aziz. A royal announcement on Sunday said that the Sultan pronounced "Talak Satu" on his wife with whom he has four children. Under this type of divorce, the man has the right to withdraw his decision within three months and 10 days of his pronouncement, AFP said. (Straits Times Tuesday 4 Feb 2003)(3)

Brunei's Internal Security Department (ISD) has detained three people under the Internal Security Act after investigations into the activities of a group said to have been disrupting religious harmony in the sultanate. The government said in a statement that 25 others have been questioned during the course of investigations, which began in December last year when the three principal suspects were detained. The 25 - 13 Muslims and 12 Christians - were released after being questioned as they are not directly involved in subversive activities, officials said. (Straits Times 24 Mar 2001)

Brunei, which was lukewarm to promoting tourism several years ago, is now opening its doors wider to foreign tourists to boost its economy, said officials. The Brunei government has set aside B$5 million (S$5 million) to promote tourism next year that is expected to create 11,000 jobs if one million tourists visit the country, according to the Borneo Bulletin.
