SHAU
& YOGA For Actors |
|
This
8-day workshop, conducted by Jayanta Meetei
Chongtham, seeks to introduce the basic forms of
shau & yoga to actors and also shows them how
they can best use a combination of these. |
|
The
workshop will also offer guidance on how actors
can eventually improvise and develop their won
forms. |
|
Why
shau? |
|
Shau
can help an actor improve his/her body stamina,
flexibility and balance. |
|
Why
yoga? |
|
Yoya
seeks to balance the body, mind and spirit. The
workshop will concentrate primarily on asana (yoga
postures) and also on pranayama (expanding and
extending the breath). The aim is to increase an
actor's imaginative power and focus. |

About
the instructor: |
|
Jayanta
holds a Diploma in Theatre Arts (Acting
Specialisation) from India's National School of
Drama and was a member of its Repertory Company
before winning a scholarship to PPAS' Theatre
Training & Research Programme. He has
performed in many plays in India, working with
distinguished directors, in Indian plays as well
as plays by Edward Albee, Chekhov, Ibsen and
Brecht. |

Acting
Workshop |
|
Designed
and supervised by Mr Robert Draffin*, this
3-day workshop caters to actors with some basic
experience. It focuses on training exercises that
develop vocal and physical fluency. |
|
This
workshop also gives a small sample of the work
that makes up part of the first year Theatre
Training & Research Programme (TTRP)
curriculum. |

They

*Mr
Robert Draffin is Teacher of Acting in Practice
Performing Arts School's Theatre Training &
Research Programme. |
|
For 25
years, Mr Draffin has been a director, actor,
dramaturg, writer, choreographer, and teacher in
theatre, with his last appointment being as Acting
Teacher at Victorian College of the Arts,
Melbourne, Australia. |
|
He has
studied with the Odin Teatret, the Laban Institute
of Movement and leading performers and teachers in
Indonesia. He has directed traditional and
contemporary theatre, devised performances and
written and adapted scripts that have been
performed internationally. Despite mainstream
exposure, his primary interest is in alternative
and experimental theatre, and in research into
areas where performance training and practice have
evolved and challenged each other. |

Theatre
Training & Research Programme (TTRP) |
|
The
TTRP is a three-year training programme for
contemporary theatre performers. It aspires to
nurture solidly-skilled, technically-adept,
critically-aware, socially-engaged, and
artistically-autonomous performers. The training
includes contemporary acting, movement, digital
arts and immersion in four Asian classical theatre
systems. |
|
The
course will primarily be conducted in English.
Japanese-speaking participants are welcome. |

A
certificate of participation will be awarded
following the completion of the course. |

PPAS
is a non-profit institution, registered with the
Ministry of Education in Singapore, teaching dance
and theatre bilingually in Chinese and English. It
was co-founded in 1965 by dancer/choreographer GOH
Lay Kuan and dramatist KUO Pao Kun, both
recipients of the Cultural Medallion, Singapore's
highest honour given to artists. PPAS has been
chiefly responsible for introducing new ideas and
methodologies to the performing arts scene in
Singapore, including those of Martha Graham,
Brecht and Grotowski. It has also introduced
multi-lingual and multi-cultural theatre practice.
PPAS also founded the Substation, Singapore's
first arts centre and The Theatre Practice, a
major theatre company. |
