It's a Birthday
Bonanza at library@esplanade
this September as we celebrate ONE whole year of being Singapore's
performing arts library!
Exhibitions
If you haven't seen Lights, Camera, Sound, Action - our
interactive
exhibition about film, at our Innovation Gallery, you'd
better be quick.
Our brand new exhibit, What is Dance ?, featuring a video
installation from the renowned TanzfilmInstitut in Germany, will
be launched in conjunction with our birthday in mid-September.
Peranakan Pieces
The Perankans are well known for their drama, theatricality and
colour. As natural performing artists, what better way to
acknowledge their cultural influence than in our glass exhibition
cases which feature traditional Peranakan attire, ceramics and
even beaded footwear. This exhibition is presented by Amor Meus,
the luxurious boutique at Esplanade Mall, #02-06.

Film Saturday - Film Basics
With Felix Cheong
Watch movie clips, role-play scenes from screenplays and learn the
basic theory of filmmaking. An acclaimed local writer and
poet both in Singapore and abroad, Felix shares his knowledge of
filmmaking art.

SSO Meet-The-Artiste: Invitation To A Dance
Composer Chen Yi and George Wong
World-renowned Chinese composer Chen Yi will discuss the Asian
première of her Chinese Folk Dance Suite for Violin and
Orchestra with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Also, SSO
Education and Outreach Manager George Wong will provide
interesting commentary on the other works of the evening by
Sarasate and Richard Strauss.

Creating Performance (Unicorn Theatre - Springboard)
Tony Graham, Unicorn Theatre
Tony Graham is the Artistic Director of Unicorn Theatre for
Children, UK's oldest professional theatre for children. His
talk will consider the primacy of imagination in children's
development. Literature for children has recently become a
major global enterprise with the success of J.K Rowling and Philip
Pullman's books.
Tony will talk about the great potential for the development of
art for
children in the 21st century.
How does it differ from art for adults? I? Is it a vehicle for
moral
instruction? Is it a tool for social engineering? Or is it about a
different sort of enrichment?

A Celebration of Russian Masters: A Session with the National
University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra
By The Centre for the Arts, NUS
Get up close and personal with members from the National
University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra and be entertained in
an afternoon of light chamber music. Speaker Phan Ming Yen will
also present an enlightening talk on Russian composers
Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky.

SSO:Pre Concert Talks - Bruckner's Eighth Symphony
Dr Eugene Dairianathan
Austrian composer and master organist Anton Bruckner's Eighth
Symphony, one of the last of the great Romantic symphonies, is a
grandly complex masterpiece. Dedicated to Emperor Franz Joseph I,
the symphony was completed in 1887 and went through a series of
revisions by the composer.

large scale composition techniques were influenced to a certain
extent by his improvisation skills on the organ, and his symphony
brought the style to newer and greater heights. Come join Deputy
Head of the Music Department at NIE, Dr Eugene Dairianathan as he
discusses this magnificent symphony that
will be performed by the SSO.

SSO Meet-The-Artiste
with Joyce Koh, Frode Haltli and George Wong
How would a concerto for accordion and orchestra possibly sound?
Singaporean composer Joyce Koh has created just such a piece as
part of the SSO's DaimlerChrysler World Premiere Series. Come
listen to what she has to say as she discusses the world première
of this intriguingly unique piece with accordion soloist Frode
Haltli. Take this opportunity to find out more about the world of
the composer and the accordionist. Hosted by SSO
