Five birds have been shortlisted by the Nature Society of Singapore's bird group in its hunt to find a national bird for Singapore. They are: crimson sunbird, olive-backed sunbird, greater racket-tailed drongo, black-naped oriole and the white-bellied fish eagle. The quest is part of the society's fourth annual nature day event being held over the weekend and today to showcase its work. (Straits Times 27 May 2002) (H1)

Sungei Buloh Nature Park and Labrador Nature Area in Labrador Park are now, by law, protected from development. National Development Minister MAH Bow Tan made public the new additions before he toured Sungei Buloh on Saturday to see the results of a S$1.9 million upgrade of the park's facilities.   The 142-year-old Botanic Gardens will undergo a S$35 million redevelopment to make it more visitor-friendly, and build a new research and teaching complex. This was announced by National Development Minister MAH Bow Tan on 23 Mar 2001. The new complex will house the gardens' collection of plants, library, laboratories and School of Horticulture. The gardens' plant collection includes more than 600,000 specimens of tropical plants, and the library boasts archival material dating back to the 16th century. The park was re-opened last night after a S$4 million upgrading to improve the lighting, and build more shelters, toilets, carparks and a fishing pier. The Taman Serasi Food Centre, across the road from the entrance to the Botanic Gardens, will have to make way for redevelopment of the Botanic Gardens. The hawkers will be asked to move out by the end of this year. (Straits Times 24 Mar 2001)

Another park has opened in the western part of Singapore after a break of 12 years. Choa Chu Kang Park, developed at a cost of S$2.8 million, is the first to open in the west since Bukit Batok Nature Park opened in 1988. The park has packed within its 5 ha of land a children's playground, an amphitheatre, fitness stations, jogging trails and taiqi corners. It has also retained a small patch of forest and wild orchard left by the early settlers. The park's opening brings the total number of regional parks in the west to nine and, on the whole island, to 43. (Straits Times 12 Nov 2000)
