One of Singapore's first online distributors of MP3 music, Vivamusic.com, has closed. A petition, filed by Epilogue Catering which is owed S$200,000 by the multi-media music distributor, for the company to be wound up has been ordered. Vivamusic was set up in 1998 to sell digital music files over the Internet. (Straits Times 5 Jan 2002) (H17)
Retail sales of compact discs and cassettes have shrunk by more than half since 1997. They plunged from S$115 million that year to S$57.7 million in 1998 and slipped further last year to S$53 million. Music lovers bought 5.4 million CDs in 1997, but only 3.84 million in 1998 and 3.77 million last year. Only 1.8 million CDs were sold in the first half of 2000, a little less than the half-year total in 1998 and last year. SPVA chairman Gary See said that cassettes used to command 70% of the market in 1986 and now CDs make up 95% of the market. He noted that the music industry was losing 20% of its annual sales to pirates.
