NEWS SNIPPETS
The Films
and Publications Department (FPD) said on 18 Dec 2000 that the police,
working with its officials, have conducted about 1900 raids islandwide
to date this year. They have arrested about 2000 people, aged 14 to 40
and seized about 410,000 obscene VCDs. This is less than half the total
confiscated last eyar. A reason is that fewer shops, compared to 1999, are now selling illegal
VCDs. Any person possessing an obscene
film can be fined S$500 per film and/or jailed for up to six months.
Those found guilty of distributing obscene videos can be fined up to
S$80,000 and/or jailed for up to two years. (Straits Times 19 Dec 2000)
