The Market Place

  Jasons' The Market Place opened on 19 Dec 2000 in the basement of Raffles City. It replaces the former Sogo supermarket. Jasons' is Cold Storage's 34th store and claims to be the most luxurious to date. Cold Storage's General Manager Mr Huw Jenkins said Jasons houses the largest supermarket wine list here.

  The S$400 million luxury hotel, Fullerton Hotel, opened on 15 Dec 2000 in Fullerton Square near Raffles Place. Its room rates range from S$450 to S$3,800. The hotel building is the 72-year-old former General Post Office. Its official launch is on 31 Dec 2000. For more pictures,click HERE.

  Rivervale Mall, situated at 11 Rivervale Crescent in Sengkang, is the newest shopping mall to open in Singapore. A soft launch was held on 17 Nov 2000 during which magic shows, as well as beachwear fashion shows, were staged. The mall has 49 shops plying a variety of goods and services, such as banking, fashion apparel, home furnishing and personal care. There's even a supermarket run by NTUC Fairprice. The mall can be reached using SBS bus service nos. 86, 371 and 508.

  The Annexe, a collection of 47 streetwear shops, opened on the fourth and fifth levels of The Hereen in Orchard Road on 12 Oct 2000. It occupies 20,000 sq ft of space vacated by electronic goods shop Electric City. The shops are small, ranging from 98 sq ft to 400 sq ft.

  The new Nanyang Polytechnic campus in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 was officially opened by Prime Minister GOH Chok Tong on 6 Oct 2000. It was built at a cost of more than S$500 million.

  The John Hopkins-NUH International Medical Centre (IMC) at Kent Ridge was officially opened by Deputy Prime Minister Tony TAN on 6 Oct 2000. It specialises in cancer treatment and currently uses a ward at NUH Kent Ridge wing which has space for 14 beds. It also has three consultation rooms for its outpatient clinic. The centre now charges S$100 for an extended consultation and S$250 per day for a bed in their ward.

  The University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business opened its Asian campus at the 115-year-old House of TAN Yeok Nee in Clemenceau Avenue on 14 Sep 2000. This is the business school's third campus, after its first two in Chicago and Barcelona in Spain.

     The Manchester United Store in Singapore, the first outside the United Kingdom, opened on 2 Sep 2000 at the corner of Orchard and Tanglin Roads.

     GIANT, a hypermart, has opened for business at IMM Jurong.

     OG Albert Complex opened for business on Friday 29 Jun 2000. It replaces OG People's Park which opened its doors for the last time on Thursday 28 Jun 2000. The 28-year-old OG Building at People's Park will be demolished and a brand new 7th storey OG Building, double the size of the existing building, will be completed in the middle of 2002. 

     Amrita Spa opens for membership at Raffles City. It has 50,000 sq ft of space, with spa and fitness facilities. Membership packages are noe available from S$2000. First 200 to sign up will receive a three-month bonus. Targeted to open in August 2000.

     Singapore's first underground mall, CityLink Mall, between City Hall MRT and Suntec City, opened on 1 Jul 2000.

     The National Library Orchard Branch opened its doors recently. The picture above shows the entrance to the library from the building's escalators at the lower left of the picture. Notice the lighting is subdued at this area. Beyond the glass doors is the customer service counter. The books are found on shelves to the left and right of the entrance. Dome cafe is located at the right corner, next to its side entrance. This picture was taken on 29 Nov 1999 using a Fujifilm Instax 100 camera.
