Turf City shopping mall will open its doors in the middle of
November 2001 at the 56-ha site of the old Bukit Timah Turf Club. The
760,000sq ft Turf City building was created by linking together

at 3, Havelock Road. The Family Court used to operate from an

StarEast
Club opened its doors on 17 Aug 2001 at the ground floor of
Planet Hollywood at Liat Towers in Orchard Road. The 1,600sq ft
club, which boasts Hongkong stars like Eric Tsang, Alan Tam and
Jackie Chan as backers, aims to cater mainly to
Mandarin-oriented yuppies. StarEast Club is at #02-02 Liat
Towers and opens from Monday to Saturday from 5pm to 3am. (Straits

The
NTUC's new home will be a S$400 million glass tower at the
junction of Raffles Quay and Marina Boulevard (opposite Fullerton
Hotel). The building will be linked underground to Raffles Place
MRT Station. Construction is expected to start next year and be
completed by 2004. The cost of NTUC's office space will be funded
by a grant from the Government and the rest will be borne by the
Singapore Labour Foundation, which is chipping in S$150 million.

Eighteen
hawkers and 12 restaurants have been selected to bring open-air
dining back to Chinatown, after an absence of 20 years. Food
Street, a project by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), is
likely to open in the last quarter of 2001 and is expected to
revive the nightlife there. Now undergoing a S$1 million
construction, Food Street will have an outdoor eating area for
300 persons when completed. The hawkers and restaurants were
picked out of a total of 175 applications, 134 of which were for
the hawker kiosks and 41 for restaurant shop spaces. Among those
selected are Ming Fa Noodles, and Tai Tong Restaurant. Tai Tong
Restaurant was founded in 1928 and was one of the top Chinese
restaurants in Singapore in the 1950s and 1960s. It will be
known as Da Dong Restaurant.(Straits

The
oldest 100-yen (S$1.47) shop chain in Japan will come to
Singapore before the end of the year. Daiso Industries, which runs
a wildly successful 2,000-store chain in Japan, has teamed up with
Indonesian retailing giant Matahari in its first investment in
South-east Asia. Executives are shopping for a 2,800 sqm site,
according to Daiso President Hirotake Yano.
