Vibgyor on
Strings - dedicated to Dikshitar
By alapana arts
30 Oct (Sun),
7.00pm, SAM Glass Hall. Free.
A violin recital by Lavanya Raghuraman with alapana teacher
T.R.Vijayakumar dedicated to one of the Trinity of Indian music, Sri
Muthuswami Dikshitar, a composer of the 18th century whose family
was the first to adapt the violin for Carnatic music. Dikshitar
passed away on Deepavali; hence this concert comprised solely of
Dikshitar’s compositions is a fitting tribute to this phenomenal
composer.
Lavanya is fortunate to inherit the musical heritage of Dikshitar
through a line of disciples: Dikshitar-Ponniah Pillai- grandson
Ponniah Pillai- Dr S.Ramanathan - R.Banumathy - Lavanya Raghuraman.
She has been learning to play the violin since the age of 5 and has
won prizes twice at the National Indian Music Competition organised
by the National Arts Council.

Art and

Community HIGHLIGHT
In conjunction
with A Heroic Decade: Singapore Art 1955–1965
A Special
Showcase in Conjunction with Singapore’s 40th Year of Independence
Celebration
Driven by the local and global
realities of post-colonial economic and political situations,
social realism, beyond an aesthetic import, took root in Singapore
as one of the anchors of local art practice. Art associations in
the 1950s were crucial in spreading these critical ideas of art
making. The talk series examines the role of such art associations
and culminates in a forum which will consider the circumstances
that promoted interests for socially-oriented artistic approaches
in the 1950s and explore how universal elements of social realism
were absorbed into the local context. Invited discussants, drawn
from a range of artists practising during the period, will reflect
on their experiences and thoughts.
