MediaCorp Radio has paid a $5,000 fine
imposed by the Media Development Authority (MDA) for airing a discussion
on a sex-related topic during Class 95FM's "The Morning Express"
programme in August this year. |

The programme, aired between 7am to 8am
on 21 August 2007, contained a prolonged discussion between the DJs
on "whether men and women should make noise during sex" and "whether

aired on local pay-TV channels such as HBO, Cinemax, Star
Movies and Celestial Movies under new age classifications

total amount spent on advertisements here grew 5.3 per cent to
S$1.2 billion in the first nine months of this year.
Advertising expenditure (Adex) for the full year is expected to
register single-digit growth, said Nielsen Media Research in a
report released yesterday. It said newspapers accounted for some
41.7 per cent, or S$500 million, of total Adex in the first nine
months. Total spending in television was S$490.4 million of
which a third, or S$168.8 million, went to Channel 8, Nielsen
said. Channel U surpassed Channel 5 as Singapore's second-most
popular advertising destination on television by grabbing a

Cable Vision (SCV) has been asked by Malaysian authorities and the
TV3 broadcaster to stop supplying these two free channels on its
network. SCV said yesterday that TV3 will stop airing on its
network on July 22 and RTM TV2, on July 23. About 90 per cent of
home here receive TV channel signals through SCV cable points.
Before SCV came onto the scene in 1995, signals were received via
rooftop antennas but SCV has progressively cabled up all HDB

Media, the company that marketed the now banned weight-loss
capsules, Slim 10, is giving full refunds to customers. The
product from China was pulled out of the market on April 15 by
the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) because it contains
fenfluramine, which is banned here. Slim 10 is strongly
suspected to have caused television artiste Andrea De Cruz's
hepatitis and liver failure. In Singapore, at least 13 people
who have been on the drug have come down with hepatitis,

Jul 2001 gave four options as answers - all of which were
incorrect. The Question: "What is the name of the Prisons
Department's Special Task Force? gave Drill, Dart, Chain and
Hammer as the options for the answer. According to both the
Prisons Department and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF),
the Prisons Task Force is known as SPEAR, or the Singapore

A
former television actress yesterday became the first person to be
charged with cocaine possession in Singapore. No plea was taken
from LOW Lin Lin, 27, who is better known as Michelle LOW. She
allegedly had a packet containing 0.46 g of cocaine at the Velvet
Underground discotheque at about 2.10am on 30 Sep 2000. No other
details were revealed in court yesterday. LOW was released on
S$10,000 bail and her passport was impounded. District Judge
Victor YEO postponed the case to 15 Aug 2001. (1)

Apart from three-year acting contracts with MediaCorp TV, each of
them also won a Nissan Cefiro and S$10,000 cash. The event boasted
a panel of eight judges, including Hongkong stars Andy LAU and
Sandra NG, as well as MediaCorp's Zoe TAY.

SingTel will launch a new service, Interactive television (iTV)
next year. It will be available via the Internet and will offer
six new channels. It will also offer video on demand, an onscreen
programme guide, home shopping, information services and
interactive gaming, as well as access to the Internet and e-mail.
The new service will be delivered through a broadband, or
high-speed, Internet connection. SingTel will first carry out a
six- to eight- month trial of the service. About 300 households in
Ang Mo Kio, Thomson and Bishan will take part. (Straits Times 18

first case of its kind, an electrician has been charged for
illegally connecting a residence to the Singapore Cable Vision (SCV)
network. On Wednesday, Richard ONG Wei Teong pleaded guilty in a
magistrate's court to tampering with a telecommunications

Economic Development Board (EDB) has joined forces with an Indian
multimedia company to make an animated film about Buddha. The
S$11-million 90-minute production entitled Buddha, due to be
finished next year, will be the first full-length animated film to

SPH
MediaWorks was granted a licence to run two TV channels on 26 Apr
2001.
Its Mandarin channel, called Channel U, will be launched on 6 May
2001 while the English one, TV Works, will go on air two weeks
later on 20 May 2001. The broadcasting arm of Singapore Press
Holdings (SPH) applied for a licence last June after the
Government announced that it would liberalise the media scene.

Errant
broadcasters who meddle in Singapore politics might find
themselves slapped with a restriction on the number of households
which receive their broadcast through Singapore cable Vision (SCV).
Offending broadcasters may also be moved up to a more expensive
tier, or be blanked out altogether in extreme cases. Information

MediaWorks,
the broadcast arm of media giant Singapore Press Holdings, now
holds a 50% stake in a newly-formed joint- venture company called
UnionWorks. This will own and run the radio business currently
operated by NTUC Media, which has the other 50% stake. The new
organisation will operate the English-based FM 91.3 and the
Mandarin-based FM 100.3, which NTUC Media runs currently. Both
24-hour music stations have been on the air since 1991. (Straits

stations Class 95 and Perfect 10 have come in for some flak from
broadcasting watchdog Programme Advisory Committee for putting
crude jokes on air during their morning shows. In a report
released on 2 Mar 2001, the Committee said the stations "crossed
the line of good taste" by including "many sexual

TCS 8 actress Margaret LEE Mui Lin, 30, who cheated a bank into
granting her a S$30,000 loan for home renovations which never took
place, was fined S$3,000 on 15 Feb 2001. A district court heard that
she used the bank loan to tide her over her financial problems.
This was in 1996. This only came to light on 21 Jan 1999, after
her former husband, Mr Colin Stuart, 32, lodged a police report
when he discovered Lee had named him as the joint applicant of the
loan without his knowledge. She pleaded guilty to cheating an DBS

Star Search winner Vivian LAI Yi-lin, who guest-starred in the
action TV series Dare To Strike, was charged in court on 20 Dec 2000
with causing a traffic accident. No one was hurt in the accident on 1
Aug 2000. Vivian, 24, a permanent resident here, was also charged with
driving without a valid licence and insurance cover. She had said in
earlier reports that she got her driving licence on a trip home to
Taiwan in May after a month of theory and practical tests. Singapore
traffic rules require a permanent resident to convert an international
driving licence to a local licence to drive here. (Straits Times 21 Dec

Television awards on 7 Dec 2000, Singapore's Vernetta Lopez was named Best
Comedy Actress and Gurmit Singh clinched the Best Comedy Actor award.
Television Corporation of Singapore bagged the Broadcaster of the Year

MediaCorp on 8 Nov 2000. She has signed a three-year acting contract

Hunt's co-host Erica Lee quit MediaCorp to join MediaWorks on

TV actress Ann Kok,

artiste-management company. She will move to Hongkong for a career in

artiste has resigned to join MediaWorks. Veteren compere Guo Liang, 32,
will start work with MediaWorks in October 2000. Another compere, Darren
Lim, became the 3rd to quit MediaCorp Studios to join

Mr Ernest Wong, 55,
will retire as United Overseas Bank (UOB) president at the end of next
month. He will then take over from Mr Lim Hup Seng as the chief
executive officer of the Media Corporation of Singapore on 1 Oct 2000.
Bryan Wong, 29,
is the 2nd MediaCorp Studios artistes to rejoin. He tendered his resignation
on 23 Aug 2000. He will start work at MediaWorks on 1 Oct 2000.

Beat co-host Kym Ng became the 1st artiste to resign from MediaCorp Studios to join rival TV
station SPH MediaWorks. She submitted her resignation on 21 Aug 2000.
Media group Singapore Press
Holdings (SPH) announced on 22 Aug 2000 that it has set up two separate
television news units within its English, and Malay; and Chinese
newspaper divisions. The two units will produce news and current-affairs
programmes for two channels to be run by SPH MediaWorks, and hope to be
ready to do so by early next year.
Zoe Tay, Queen of Caldecott
Hill, has renewed her acting contract with MediaCorp Studios. MediaCorp
artiste manager Lim Choon How announced the news on 3 Aug 2000.
The new kid on the block,
SPH MediaWorks, has scored a coup by netting media luminaries Man Shu
Sum and Andrea Teo to fill key positions in its newly-formed broadcast
subsidiary. Mr Man has 25 years of broacasting experience, of which 19
years was spent with Television Corporation of Singapore. Ms Teo is best
known for steering Singapore's top sitcoms, like Under One Roof, and

Singapore Cable Vision's
Internet television will start as a trial service in August 2000. The trial
service may cost S$12 per month. It gives about 3000 initial subscribers
broadband Internet access on their television screens and interactive
television channels.
Interactive television will
arrive in Singapore by the end of the year (2000). It will allow viewers to get
additional information about what is showing on their television screen
by clicking on icons on the screen. MediaCorp chief executive officer
Lim Hup Seng announced the launch of interactive television by the
Television Corporation of Singapore (TCS) on 10 Jul 2000.
Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), on 8 Jun 2000, announced it has set up a S$50 million company, SPH
Mediaworks,
to run its broadcasting business. It has appointed former COO of Media
Corporation of Singapore, Mr Lee Cheok Yew, as chief executive officer
of the new subsidiary. SPH Mediaworks is applying for licences for two
television channels, likely to be in English and Chinese, and expects to
launch them a year after obtaining the licences.
Minister for Information and
the Arts Lee Yock Suan, on 5 June 2000, announced that Singapore's media
industry is to be liberalised. To begin with, Singapore Press Holdings,
which now publishes 10 newspapers in 4 languages, will be able to cross
over into television and radio. The Media Corporation of Singapore,
which owns the local TV and most of the local radio channels, will get a
newspaper licence. SPH will be able to operate up to two free-to-air
television channels and run one or two radio stations. There will also
be a review on the ban on satellite dishes.
