The number of motorcyclists and pillion riders who died on the
roads here increased to 101 in 2002 from 88 in 2001. In 2002,
an average of one motorcyclist died in a road accident every four
days. About 60 per cent of those who died were below 30 years old.
Twelve of the 75 motorcyclists involved in fatal accidents in 2002
had less than a year of riding experience and 10 of the
probationary riders were below 24 years old. (Straits

During
a period when the motorcycle population had gone down from
131,869 motorcycles in 2001 to 131,092 motorcycles in October
this year, 72 riders and nine in the pillion seat died in bike
accidents. This was an increase against 2001's corresponding
figures of 68 and eight. (Straits

A
prospective motorcyclist now needs to know how to handle a
motorcycle on a wet road and at night before he can sit for a
test to get his Class 2B licence. He also has to be able to
navigate his bike around bends in busy residential areas, brake
on a wet surface in an emergency, and interact with other road
users. The requirements are part of an effort by the Traffic
Police to reduce the number of accidents and deaths involving
road users riding bikes which are 200 cc or less. Seven in 10
Singaporean motorcyclists involved in fatal accidents last year
were riding these smaller machines. Bike riders also account for
nearly half of all deaths on the roads every year since 1997. (Straits

Accident
figures show motorcyclists are the most vulnerable, accounting for
nearly half of all deaths on the road every year since 1997.
Although the 89 bikers and pillion riders who died last year were
fewer than the 99 the year before, they still make up about 45 per
cent of those who died in road accidents last year. The proportion
hardly changed despite a record low in the number of road deaths
last year. The 197 deaths - 17 fewer than the year before - were
the lowest number since 1974. 3,307 motorcyclists were caught
speeding last year, compared to 2,410 the year before. The number
of motorcyclists caught beating the red light leapt to 682 last
year, up 100 from the year before. (The

The National
Safety Council on 17 Dec 2000 released accident and emergency figures from a
survey done in 1998. The survey revealed that one in every two riders
involved in an accident suffered from multiple injuries. One in every
five sustained a head injury, which is often fatal. (Straits Times 18
