Festival 2007 Highlights
Exploring the Core Events of the Festival
The main celebrations of the Singapore Food Festival 2007 mainly
revolve around six unique core events specially organised and
tailored to tempt the taste buds in the ethnic vein with a
difference. With each core event taking place over a weekend in the
month of July, epicureans, gourmands and everyone who loves food can
certainly look forward to have their appetites whetted and their
schedules filled with exciting culinary entertainment.
Here is what diners can expect from each exciting core event:
Singapore TIGER Chilli Crab Festival (29 June ¨C 1 July)
Two of Singapore¡¯s signature loves, chilli crabs and Tiger Beer,
will take centre stage in this grand event at Civic Plaza in the
heart of Ngee Ann City to kick-start the month-long Singapore Food
Festival celebrations. Indulge in crab-mania with over 30 stalls
selling delectable variations of chilli crabs along with other
delectable offerings, featuring famous F&B partners such as JUMBO,
Palm Beach, Prima and Gold Coast just to name a few.
This event¡¯s cynosure however is set to take place on 30 June at
7pm. Three hundred fortunate diners who would have queued patiently
at 4pm on 29 June and 30 June will sit at a grand banquet dubbed the
¡°Singapore¡¯s Largest, Free-est Chilli Crab Feast¡± where 300kg of
chilli crabs and free-flow TIGER beer will be served.
Curry Fish Head Mela (5 ¨C 8 July)
Organised by The Banana Leaf Apolo at Little India Arcade, diners
can look forward to a feast of Curry Fish Head and other favourites
such as dum biriyani, curry crabs and tiger prawn masala at the
¡®Mela¡¯ which means a ¡°gathering¡± in Sanskrit. Besides invigorating
Kathakali and Bhangra performances, an attempt will also be made to
enter the Guiness Book of Records for the largest one-time serving
of Curry Fish Heads. One highlight not to miss is the performance of
award-winning Princess Gopika Varma from the ancient Travancore
royal family at the opening ceremony of the event on 5 July.
Yuk! Makan Festival (7 ¨C 8 July)
The Malay Heritage Centre invites all to tuck in and savour the
traditional flavours of the kampong culture. Held on the historical
grounds of Singapore¡¯s first Istana (Malay for ¡°palace¡±), the event
will showcase a wide array of halal delights and heritage dishes
such as ¡°Mee Mydin¡± and ¡°Air Batu Kepal¡± (round-shaped ice kachang
balls). Look out for cooking competitions on Malay cuisine and
deserts, as well as kite painting demonstrations by local cultural
icon, Mr Sarkasi Said, focusing on the culinary theme.
Witness the making of a ¡°Roti Jala¡± (¡®net¡¯ bread) pyramid by 7
celebrities in 77 minutes on 7 July 2007. Roti Jala also known as
Roti Kirai and also known as Roti Renjis, is made from a crepe-like
batter of flour, eggs, butter and coconut milk. The special yellow
colour is made with the help of tumeric. The special mould or cup
with small holes is used to make a ¡®lacy¡¯ crepe, cooked briefly over
a hot greased griddle. Roti Jala is an ideal accompaniment to dishes
with lots of rich curry sauces or gravy, and usually served during
special occasions.
Also to look out is the rare and unique Mee Mydin dish that could
only be previously found in the first settlement era of Kampong
Gelam. Not forgetting the best and ever favourite local Malay food
of Mee Rebus, Nasi Lemak, Lontong and many more.
The fabulous, DJ A.B. Sheik from MediaCorp Radio Warna 94.2FM will
be making his appearance, along with other artistes like Suhaimi
Yusoff (from Police and Thief), New Boyz and Delima over this 2-day
event.

Chinatown in the form of a map).
