Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998. Chinese 77% Malays 14% Indians 7.6% Other ethnic groups 1.4% Working Language: English Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil. Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners. A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Thursday 17 Aug 2000 Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew said yesterday that South-east Asian countries must work together to restore international interest and confidence in Asean's potential, even as Indonesia, its biggest member, grapples with its own problems. He observed that North Asia - Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, and Hongkong - was better placed for higher growth than South-east Asia. In a survey of 605 Singapore citizens and permanent residents commissioned by The Straits Times, nine in 10 of the respondents said that Singaporeans are materialistic, and seven in 10 believe that Singaporeans are more so now, compared with five years ago. Six in 10 believe the things they own reflect how well they are doing in life. Nearly one-third of all respondents said they would not consider community work at all. The Singapore Exchange (SGX) yesterday suspended all trading in the sky-rocketing shares of reclamation company Links Island Holdings. It is also believed to have called in the white-collar crime unit to probe possible criminal activity. In a statement last night, it said it was checking if the company's stock had been cornered after it found recent trading activity 'irregular'. Asia Hongkong: Internet whiz kid Richard Li has severed ties with the Hutchinson Whampoa conglomerate owned by his father, Li Ka-Shing, to avoid a conflict of business interests. He resigned as deputy chairman and executive director of Hutchinson, which is fast becoming a major global telecoms player. Around the world Moscow: Russia at last accepted external help yesterday in a last-ditch attempt to save a submarine crew trapped on the sea-bed, but there were fears it might be too late as the 118 crew members were no longer showing signs of life. Chicago: The University of Chicago conducted a study on beauty sleep on 149 healthy men who were of normal weight and ranged in age from 16 to 83 from 1985 to 1999. The researchers found: *As men moved into mid-life, from age 35 to 50, their total amount of sleep remained fairly constant *By the time they reached age 45, they had nearly lost the ability to fall into deep sleep *The amount of deep sleep decreased from nearly 20% of a normal night's sleep for men 25 years or younger to less than 5% for those over 35 *After age 50, the men's total amount of sleep declined by about 27 minutes a decade. They also awoke more frequently during the night.
