Planners expect the
population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking
into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working
here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million
today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working
committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have
babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate
continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners,
will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Bukit Timah Plaza's
management corporation is facing legal action for gross negligence in
allowing sewage to contaminate the building's water supply system. The
filthy water has made at least 65 people fall ill since last week. The
Public Utilities Board (PUB) and the Ministry of Environment (ENV) said
yesterday that their investigations showed that the management
corporation had "grossly neglected its duty" to maintain the
complex's water supply and internal sewage-piping systems.
Two days after City Beat
co-host Kym Ng resigned from MediaCorp Studios to join rival TV station
SPH MediaWorks, Bryan Wong, 29, tendered his resignation yesterday
morning. He will start work at MediaWorks on 1 Oct 2000.
The North-East MRT line is
more than half complete, and will be ready to move commuters by the end
of 2002.
Singaporeans clamouring for
a five-day week should not insist on having every weekend off. Employees
must be flexible and be ready to work on some Saturdays, said Mr Lim
Boon Heng, Minister without Portfolio and chief of the National Trades
Union Congress after his lecture at the National University of Singapore
yesterday..
Asia
Jakarta: Indonesia's
new-look cabinet, announced yesterday, received brickbats from the
country's biggest political party, which predicted increased political
friction over President Abdurrahman Wahid's failure to accommodate the
wishes of Vice-President Megawati Sukarnoputri.
Around the world
London: British Police said
they have arrested three men suspected of having mounted a robbery in
cyberspace of a UK Internet bank, stealing many thousands of pounds in
what is thought to be a new tactic for organised crime. But the online
bank EGG, which has 1.1 million customers, denied its security had been
breached in the fraud case. The swoop on Tuesday followed a six-month
investigation which began with a tip-off from the bank concerned.
