The Army¡¯s 1st Commando
Battalion, the Republic of Singapore Air Force¡¯s 144 Squadron and the
Republic of Singapore Navy¡¯s RSS Resolution have won the Best Combat
Unit, the Best Fighter Squadron and the Best Ship awards respectively. |
|
In addition, 10 National Service (NS) units
were also recognized for their outstanding performances during the work
year. |
|
President S R Nathan and Minister for
Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean presented the awards to the winners on 1 Jul
05 during the SAF Day Parade at SAFTI Military Institute. |
|
The annual Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Best
Unit and Best NS Unit Competition, introduced in 1969 and 1993
respectively, recognise units that have distinguished themselves in the
areas of combat readiness, operational proficiency and administrative
excellence. |
|
The annual competition seeks to enhance the
combat readiness of SAF units and its formations whilst at the same time
promote esprit de corps and camaraderie among its soldiers. |

The Army |
|
Fighting spirit and tenacity have been
instrumental in helping the 1st Commando Battalion win the coveted SAF
Best Combat Unit award for the 19th time. |
|
Considered among the SAF¡¯s elite, the unit
goes through one of the toughest training regimes and is trained for
strike, reconnaissance, infiltration and anti-terrorist missions. 1st
Commando Battalion is currently commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel (LTC)
Luis Phay. |

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) |
|
Winning the Best Fighter Squadron award is
the RSAF's 144 Squadron, commanded by LTC Pek Hong Hwa. This is the
second time the Squadron has won the award, previously clinching it in
1995. |
|
144 Squadron operates the F-5S/T Tiger which
is a multi-role supersonic fighter aircraft in the RSAF's inventory.
Tasked with air-to-air/air-to-ground missions, the Squadron's primary
role is in air defence and intercept against all types of threats. |

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) |
|
This is the first time that RSS Resolution
has won the coveted Best Ship award. Commissioned on 18 March 2000, RSS
Resolution is from the RSN¡¯s 191 Squadron and is currently commanded by
LTC Lee Swee Ann. |
|
The 141-metre long Landing Ship Tank is
built for multi-role operations ranging from logistics support to
maritime security operations. With its crew of sixty-five officers and
ratings, its primary mission is to support SAF operations in the defence
of Singapore's sovereignty. |

NS Units |
|
Three of the 10 winners have won the award
for the first time. They are: 682nd Battalion Singapore Infantry
Regiment (682 SIR), 588th Battalion Singapore Infantry Regiment (588
SIR), 275th Singapore Artillery (275 SA). The 6th Signal Battalion has
won the award ten times. |
|
The other winners of the Best NS unit awards
include 657 SIR, 596 SIR, 550 GDS, 466 SAR, 324 SCE and 9 DS Med Bn. The
NS units were assessed on their overall operational readiness during
field proficiency tests, mobilisation exercises, as well as the
individual marksmanship and physical proficiency tests. |
