Extension of Medisave Use for
Diagnostic Scans for Cancer Treatment |
From 1 April 2008, cancer patients will be
able to use their Medisave to pay for MRI, CT and PET scans as
prescribed by their doctors, even if done in an outpatient clinic. |
Today, they can do so but only when they are
hospitalized as Medisave is primarily meant for hospitalisation. |
The Ministry of Health decided on this
policy change as such scans are now part of the standard of care in the
outpatient setting for many cancer conditions. For example, a diagnostic
scan is needed to monitor the patient’s treatment progress, or during a
post-treatment follow-up check. |
Patients can withdraw up to $600 from their
Medisave account each year to help pay for the above scans. |
