Police have arrested a man believed to have
cheated at least six elderly job-seekers, since May 2007, of mobile
phones in exchange for jobs as cleaners. |
|
As part of the job requirement, the
victims were told to sign up for mobile phone lines. After the
victims had duly applied for the phone lines and bought the new
mobile phones, the conman would take the mobile phones,
promising to return them to the victims the following day, when
he would bring the victims to their new workplace. Of course,
after handing over the mobile phones, the victims would not see
the conman again. The handphones would have been sold for cash.
There were also no real jobs waiting for the victims in the
first place. |
|
The 38-year-old Chinese man was arrested
today at 2pm . He will be charged in court on 29 Mar 08 for the offence
of Cheating under Sec 420 of the Penal Code, Cap 224. |
|
Commander Bedok Police Division Deputy
Assistant Commissioner Lim Kok Thai said, “Let this be a strong signal
to would-be criminals that police take a very serious view such offences
and will go all out to apprehend those that break the law“. In addition,
Police remind members of public to be wary when they encounter cases of
such similar nature and call the police should they sense something
amiss. |
|
Police believe there may be others who have
fallen prey to similar scams and urge them to lodge a police report if
they have not done so. |
