Maybe this
matured perspective is the reason why tango appeals
more to grown-ups than teenyboppers. Most tangueros
are in
their late-20s to 40s. Even if the words in Spanish
are not
intelligible to you, the melody of the music tells the story
just as vividly.

Spanish teachers Pilar Fernandez & Diego Cornella have
confirmed their visit to Singapore from 9-11/Nov. In
addition
to private lessons, they will teach one evening of advanced
Salsa
Casino and two afternoons of Tango at the Drama Centre.
Rumour
says they will appear at the Milonga too. Will they
perform???
Classes are packaged into 5 hours for beginners and 5 hours
for
intermediates, at $135 each. Registrations to be made
with
Jitterbugs (887-0383), and members get a further discount.
Another tango teacher in town for two weeks is Ogie Mendoza
from the Philippines. He visits Singapore regularly
and instructs
a pool of private students. Since we don't have any
locally-based
professional teacher, he is probably the nearest equivalent
to
someone you can learn from on a regular basis. He can
be reached
on 9054-6074 in Singapore and 0917-206-8594 in Philippines.
I mentioned sometime ago that the Italian Cultural Institute
planned to bring an Italian quartet called "Four for
Tango"
to Singapore, for a one-night
"Tribute to Astor Piazzolla" concert in November.
Unfortunately,
this has now been cancelled due to security concerns.
ICI told
me that, like all their other projects, this would most
likely
have been a free public concert. What a superb
exposure to
classic tango music this would have been for the masses!
To our tango friends from overseas, I would like to tell you
that Singapore is the most stable country in South East
Asia, with
no threat of any protest or terrorism of any kind. We
have people
of all nationalities living and dancing peacefully
side-by-side.
To sweeten your trip even more, Singapore Airline is now
offering
(http://www.singapore-air.com)
a stopover deal where you can get
a night at a 4-star hotel room, free airport transfer, and
discounted tickets to tourist attractions for just US$1!
Yes,
come and see Singapore soon, it's safe.
Taipei informed us that they now have an English
website/discussion forum http://communities.msn.com/TaipeiTango
to supplement the original Chinese-only website http://www.taipeitango.org.
I am impressed how quickly they have build up their
communities -- they now conduct classes 3 times a week,
milongas 3 times a month, and run workshops almost every
other month.
What's better than 24-hour tango music (http://www.radiocubik.com)
on the Internet? Why, 24-hour tango television on the
Internet, of course!
Check out http://www.tangocity.com
for a live feed of the Solo Tango TV station in Buenos
Aires. This station is to tango culture what MTV is to
the youth culture! It is also the place to check out
free tango lessons, and watch contemporary tango bands and
performers. On a recent visit I saw Orquesta Astrorico from
Japan, a band I heard so much about but never experienced --
until now.
Now does anyone know how to convince Singapore Cablevision
to pick up the Solo Tango channel?
