MAS Launches National
University of Singapore Centennial Commemorative Coins |
|

Senior Minister and Chairman
of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Goh Chok Tong today
launched the National University of Singapore (NUS) Centennial
Commemorative Coins at the NUS Centennial Celebration dinner. |
|
NUS started as a small medical college in
1905. Today, it is internationally acknowledged as a global university
with affiliations to the leading institutions around the world. |
|
Besides the Centennial coins to commemorate
the institution's 100 years, NUS will be organising a series of
activities to showcase its global excellence, academic distinction,
cultural vibrancy and rich heritage. |
|
Coin Design |
|
The coin design was based on the winning
entry by Mr Wong Chung Hau and Ms Aw-Yeong Yan Yan in a coin design
competition organised by NUS for its students, alumni members and staff. |
|
The design includes the following elements: |
- A single human figure depicts the
aspirations of NUS in striving towards global excellence. It reflects
the NUS community's focus on people and depicts NUS as one body. The
figure reaches towards the star in the NUS Centenniel logo, signifying
NUS' quest for global excellence as well as a personal drive for
life-long learning.
- The stylized globe signifies NUS as a
global knowledge enterprise that transcends boundaries of space and
time. The text on the circumference anchors the human figure,
suggesting that NUS equips graduates to thrive in a fast-changing
global economy.

Limited Worldwide Mintage |
|
The coins will be issued on 2 July 2005. The
details of the coins are: |
a) S$100 Gold Proof Coin
1 troy ounce of 999.9 Fine Gold. Coin diameter of 33.00 mm. Very
low mintage of 500 pieces only. Issue price: S$1,200 (GST
inclusive).
b) S$10 Silver Proof Coin
20 grams of 999 Fine Silver. Coin diameter of 38.70 mm. Mintage of
10,000 pieces. Issue price: S$68 (GST inclusive).
c) S$10 Cupro-Nickel Proof-like
Coin
20 grams of cupro-nickel. Coin diameter of 40.70 mm. Mintage of
20,000 pieces. Issue price: S$24 (GST inclusive).
