Get For Me: Monday with the Editor

  Hallo everyone

Last Saturday was CHAP GOH MAE or the fifteen and last day of the Chinese New Year celebrations. In Singapore, many shops were closed early so that family members could sit down for another round of reunion dinner. Thus is the Chinese tradition. After that day, ANG POWs or red packets with money in them could not be given anymore. Children have to wait till next Chinese New Year for such presents.

The hot weather, as well as eating too much Chinese New Year fare, has affected many a Singapore resident's health. I, myself, have come down with the flu. It is a typical pattern here in Singapore. But as the local school tests, called CAs (Curriculum Assessments), are now being held across the island, it doesn't pay for school children to be sick now. Statistics have it that the hottest month of the year is February so if you are in Singapore now, drink lots of water and try not to get too much sun if you can help it.

Last Sunday, a newborn baby was abandoned in a bloodstained toilet at Mount Elizabeth hospital. Apparently, a woman , believed to be a Filipina,  had earlier sought treatment for abdominal pain and bleeding. The baby is one of a number of babies found abandoned in recent months.  Has society changed such that the young of today engage in sex without caring about the consequences? Is our sex education programme taught in our schools effective? Is it easy for teachers to handle sex education in the classroom?

The Education Ministry has said it is reviewing its approach to sexuality issues and will release its findings at a later stage. Meanwhile, we give you the findings of a recent survey done on 2369 young people between 13 and 21 by the Singapore Planned Parenthood Association (SPPA) to find out about their dating habits, relationships and attitudes:

1 in 5 among the youths who have had sex said pornographic movies were their first source of information. More than 7 out of 10 teens said they were not comfortable learning about sex from their parents or teachers. 2 out of 5 teens are dating. About 4% said they have had sex. Of those who have had sex, only 23.5% used condoms.
