Sentosa’s remaking plans took a
step forward as it reached an agreement with Sentosa Luge Company Pte Ltd, a
wholly-owned subsidiary of New Zealand company Skyline Enterprises Limited, to
develop a luge attraction on the resort island.
It will be the first attraction of
its kind in Asia outside Japan.
Plans are being finalised to build
a 650-metre, $5.5-million luge track with an aerial chair lift cableway that
will link the cluster of attractions at the hilltop near the Carlsberg Sky
Tower to Siloso Beach’s entertainment hub.
“Bringing the luge to Sentosa
fits our ongoing efforts to rejuvenate the island with a host of entertaining
and fun facilities for our guests. A safe and year-round activity for the
whole family, it offers an enjoyable ride for the young and old alike. “
said Darrell Metzger, Chief Executive Officer of Sentosa. “The gentle
terrains coupled with the ambient lush surroundings make Sentosa a choice site
for an activity like this.”
Using the principles of gravity,
riders can either race down or leisurely cruise along a specially-designed
paved trail. The luge cart combines a unique steering and braking system that
provides the rider with total control.
A two-way chair lift, similar to a
ski lift, transports riders through a scenic 320-metre long tree-top ride back
to the starting point where they can do it all over again.
The luge on Sentosa is expected to
be completed by mid-2005.
There are currently 11 luge sites
around the globe, including five operated by Skyline Enterprises Limited in
Rotorua and Queenstown (New Zealand), and its latest in Quebec (Canada).
