The Monetary Authority of
Singapore (MAS) will issue a series of coins from 2004 to 2008 to commemorate
the Urban Redevelopment Authority's (URA) Identity Plan. |
|
The first series was launched on 13 Nov 2004 in
conjunction with URA's Old World Charm Heritage Trail. |
|
URA's Identity Plan aims to preserve the unique
"essence" of places that are close to Singaporeans' hearts by recognising,
retaining and enhancing them. These areas are grouped into various clusters.
MAS will issue a set of coins featuring one of the clusters from 2004 to 2008: |
| |
2004 |
- Old World Charm |
| |
2005 |
- Urban Villages |
| |
2006 |
- Rustic Coast |
| |
2007 |
- Southern Ridges & Hillside Villages |
| |
2008 |
- Northern Wetlands & Central Catchments |
|
|
The four areas in the Old World Charm cluster are
Balestier, Jalan Besar, Joo Chiat and Tanjong Katong. These areas were
identified because of their distinctive qualities and charm. The four areas
exude the old world charm of Singapore's yesteryears, with rich architectural
heritage, thriving street life and unique streetscapes. |
|
The launch of the 2004 Singapore Identity Plan
Coins will also mark the first time that coloured coins are issued in
Singapore. The coins come in an attractive packaging. |
|
The Old World Charm series will be issued on 3
December 2004 to coincide with the URA's Exhibition "Shaping Singapore:
Achievements (1974-2004) and Aspirations (2004-2034)". |
|

|
