PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE PRIME
MINISTER ON THE CABINET AND OTHER APPOINTMENTS |
|
|
The Prime Minister and his Cabinet
colleagues will be sworn into office by the President at 7:30 pm on
Tuesday, 30 May 2006 at the State Room, Istana. |
The letter from the Prime Minister to the
President on the new Cabinet members and other office holders is at
Annex A. |
A list of the office holders by Ministries
is at Annex B. Their appointments will be with effect from 30 May 2006,
unless otherwise stated. |
CHANGES TO MINISTERIAL APPOINTMENTS |
Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam will be appointed
as Second Minister for Finance. Concurrently, he will continue as
Minister for Education. He will also relinquish the post of Deputy
Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) to Mr Lim Hng
Kiang, but will stay on as a member of the MAS Board. |
Dr Vivian Balakrishnan will be appointed as
Second Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, and will
relinquish his appointment as Second Minister for Trade and Industry. He
will continue as Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports. |
Mr Raymond Lim will be appointed as the
Minister for Transport, and will relinquish his appointments as Second
Minister for Finance and Minister in the Prime Minister¨s Office. He
will continue as Second Minister for Foreign Affairs. |
Dr Balaji Sadasivan will be appointed as
Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and will
relinquish his appointment as Senior Minister of State in the Ministry
of Health. He will continue as Senior Minister of State in the Ministry
of Information, Communications and the Arts. |
Mr Heng Chee How will be appointed as
Minister of State in the Ministry of Health. He will relinquish his
appointments as Minister of State in the Ministry of National
Development, and Mayor of Central Singapore CDC. He will be spending
more time in the NTUC. |
PROMOTIONS |
Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed will be appointed
as Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He will
continue as Mayor of North East CDC. |
Assoc Prof Koo Tsai Kee will be appointed as
Minister of State in the Ministry of Defence. He will relinquish his
appointment in the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. |
NEW OFFICE HOLDERS |
Among the new MPs, the following will be
appointed: |
a. Ms Grace Fu will be appointed as
Minister of State in the Ministry of National Development with
effect from 1 August 2006.
b. Mr Lee Yi Shyan will be appointed
as Minister of State in the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
c. RAdm (NS) Lui Tuck Yew will be
appointed as Minister of State in the Ministry of Education.
d. Mr Masagos Zulkifli will be
appointed as Senior Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of
Education, taking over the appointment from Mr Hawazi Daipi who will
continue as Senior Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of
Manpower.
e. Mr Teo Ser Luck will be appointed
as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development,
Youth and Sports, taking over the appointment from Dr Mohamad Maliki
bin Osman who will continue as Parliamentary Secretary in the
Ministry of National Development |
Among the re-elected MPs, the following
will be appointed: |
a. Mr S. Iswaran will be appointed as Minister of
State in the Ministry of Trade and Industry with effect from 1 July
2006.
b. Dr Amy Khor will be appointed as
Senior Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of the Environment
and Water Resources, concurrently with her appointment as Mayor of
South West CDC. She will also be taking over as Chairman of the
Feedback Unit from Dr Wang Kai Yuen.
c. Mr Zainudin Nordin will be
appointed as Mayor of Central Singapore CDC. |
RETIREMENTS |
The following office holders will be
retiring from the Government: |
a. Mr Yeo Cheow Tong, Minister for
Transport. Mr Yeo was appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of
Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1985. He has been
successively Minister for Health, Minister for Community
Development, Minister for Trade and Industry, Minister for the
Environment, and Minister for Communications and Information
Technology, before assuming his present appointment in 2001.
b. Mr Chan Soo Sen, Minister of State
in the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
Mr Chan was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in the Prime
Minister¨s Office and the Ministry of Community Development in 1997.
He was Senior Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Health and
Minister of State in the Ministry of Community Development and
Sports before assuming his present appointment.
c. Mr Yatiman Yusof, Senior
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Information,
Communications and the Arts. Mr Yatiman was appointed Parliamentary
Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986 and Senior
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Information and the Arts
in 1997.
d. Mr Mohamad Maidin bin Packer Mohd,
Senior Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs. Mr
Maidin was appointed Political Secretary in the Ministry of
Communications and Information in 1988. He has been successively
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Information and the Arts
and the Ministry of Education, before assuming his present
appointment.
e. Mr Tang Guan Seng, Political
Secretary to the Senior Minister. Mr Tang was appointed
Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education in 1986. He
took up a concurrent appointment in the Ministry of Home Affairs and
was Senior Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and
Industry before assuming his present appointment. |

Tong, Mr Chan Soo Sen, Mr Yatiman Yusof, Mr Mohamad Maidin and Mr
Tang Guan Seng for their services and many contributions. |
