Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700 000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday announced a major overhaul of the civil service reward system. Life-long employment will become a thing of the past, with government administrative officers serving fixed terms in top positions, ensuring renewal in the civil service. All civil servants will get an average salary increase of 13%. This pay wage rise includes National Wages Council adjustments. From this year, all civil servants are eligible for a performance bonus of at least half a month. Eventually, the performance bonus will be built up to at least one month.

The government does not plan, yet, to merge the COE car categories into a single classification, said Communications and Information Technology Minister Yeo Cheow Tong in a Business Times interview published yesterday.

M1, Singapore's 2nd biggest mobile-phone operator said yesterday that it will be offering IDD service from September 2000. Price wars are likely to erupt with M1's entry, dragging IDD rates down even further. Since StarHub's entry into the IDD arena in April 2000, IDD rates have plummeted on average about 60%.

A pre-dawn police raid on two private flats in Balestier Road flushed out 153 illegal immigrants who had been squatting there under cramped conditions.

Nine Asia-Pacific airlines, including Singapore Airlines, are setting up an online travel agency, in what is believed to be a joint investment of about US$100 million (S$172 million). The yet unnamed portal will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year.

Asia

Jakarta: An Indonesian ferry packed with hundreds of refugees fleeing violence in the Maluku Islands sank yesterday. It was not clear if there were any survivors, officials said.

Around the world

Havana: In the end, the seven-month battle over Cuban boy Elian Gonzalez ended with a simple ceremony at Havana's international airport attended by the 6-year-old's family and 800 schoolmates.

ECONOMY

Consumer prices fell by 0.4% in Jun 2000, as lower costs of transport, communications and clothing more than offset rises in housing, health and education and stationery.

The consumer price index (CPI) for March 2000 dipped by 0.3% compared to February 2000. Food prices fell by 1.6% due mainly to cheaper seafood, vegetables and fresh pork. The cost of transport and communications fell by 0.2% due to falling car prices.

The CPI is used as an inflation gauge by measuring the change in the prices of a fixed basket of goods purchased commonly by most households.

The Government has forecast that inflation will be within 2% this year.
