Xi Calligraphy Exchange Talk & Demonstration
Co-organised
by Singapore Art Museum and the Chinese Calligraphy Society of
Singapore
Since 1991, the Chinese Calligraphy Society of Singapore has been
promoting and conducting calligraphy exchange programmes jointly
with different provinces of China. As a platform for exchange of
ideas on calligraphy, four representatives -- Zhang Jian Rui, Zhao
Dong Ming, Yu Gui Sen and Cui Ting Yao -- from the Jiang Xi
Calligraphy Society, China, will be presenting on their distinctive
calligraphy style. This is also in conjunction with The
Singapore-Jiang Xi Calligraphy Exchange Exhibition held from 23
July to 31 July 2005 at the Lee Kong Chian Hall, Singapore
Calligraphy Centre, 48 Waterloo Street.
The event is in Mandarin.

Singapore Art Story

In conjunction
with Art Of Our Time: Unyielding Passions 每 8 Masters of
Singapore Art exhibition
In the run-up to the nation's 40th birthday, learn more about the
different experiences of Singapore artists during the early years of
nation-building that may have influenced their work. With a focus on
these artists - Liu Kang, Georgette Chen, Cheong Soo Pieng, Chen Wen
Hsi and Chua Mia Tee, Patricia Ong will look at seminal works such
as National Language Class (Chua Mia Tee) and Chin Nam
Street (Liu Kang).
Patricia Ong is Assistant Manager (Exhibitions) at Singapore Art
Museum. Recent exhibitions she has curated include China Art NOW!
(2001), Huang Yao Retrospective (2001) and Liu Kang: Drawn
From Life (2002). She continues to research in contemporary
Chinese art and pioneer artists of Singapore.

Panic Acid
and Contemporary Indian Art

Singapore Art Museum and Bodhi Art
In this talk, Jitish Kallat will speak about the creation of his
works for current exhibition, Panic Acid as well as share
insights into contemporary Indian Art. Panic Acid is Jitish
Kallat's twelfth solo exhibition comprising of four distinct bodies
of work, which includes a suite of 12 paintings on canvas, a
multi-part photographic work and a portfolio of 75 intimate drawings
on paper.
About the artist
Born in 1974, Mumbai-based artist Jitish Kallat was educated at the
Sir J.J School of Art. While at art school, he was invited to
represent India amongst older and mid-career artists at
Innenseite, an international conference in Kassel,
Germany. He has participated in over a hundred exhibitions
internationally with exhibitions at major museums and institutions
such as the Tate Modern (London), Henie Onstad Kultursenter (Oslo),
Culturgest Museum (Lisbon), National Art Gallery (Malaysia), Fukuoka
Asian Art Museum (Japan) and Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Jitish has also exhibited at art fairs such as the Armory Show (New
York) and Kunstrai (Amsterdam) and will be participating at the LOOP
(Seoul), House of World Culture (Berlin), the Ecole des Beaux Arts
(Paris) and the Chicago Cultural Center amongst others. In addition,
he is an active commentator on Contemporary Art from the region,
contributing to art journals, exhibition catalogues and the local
press.
Panic Acid is held at Bodhi Art at 139 Neil Road from 15-30
July 2005.

Polymer clay was originally developed 30 years ago as a
doll-making medium but has gained immense popularity among bead
artists because of its creative
potential. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of
working with polymer clay as well as how to create "canes". Through
the use of "canes", participants will learn how to create
traditional millefiori designs as well as batik-inspired designs in
your beads. The first session will also incorporate a 30 minute
walkthrough of
Art of Our Time while the polymer clay beads are
baking.

Enjoy an evening of Indian music where neo-classical pieces
conforming to the algorithm of classical Carnatic music are given a
new twist! Watch these multi-talented artists from alapana arts as
they switch effortlessly from dancing to playing the violin, from
playing the veena to singing. Be enthralled by the smooth percussion
skills displayed by the drummers as they try their hands on various
instruments. Be enchanted by a story, told through dance, of a grand
wedding ceremony in a black sparrow's home. Be treated to a

Tang Da Wu and
his Performance Works: The Tiger's Whip
In conjunction
with Art of Our Time: Unyielding Passions 每 8 Masters of
Singapore Art exhibition

Since 1987, Koh Nguang How has been photographing Tang Da Wu's
performance art works and activities. In 1999, Koh co-curated the
exhibition, The Documentation of Tang Da Wu and His Works:
1970-1999, The Commemorative Exhibition for the 10th Fukuoka
Asian Culture Prizes, in Fukuoka, Japan, which was based on Koh's
own photographic documentation on Tang Da Wu.
Koh Nguang How is currently an independent researcher on Singapore
art. He started off as Museum Assistant at the National Museum Art
Gallery and also had an active career as an artist since 1988. His
work as a researcher became more formal with his appointment as
Researcher-in-Residence at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan
(1999), which led to further institutional collaboration projects.

continue to learn new Chinese knots for jewellery making. Thin cords
known as "Jade Thread" will be used for the project of a

enjoying the beautiful Istana grounds during the Istana's National
Day Open House. Join an On-The-Spot Art Competition where you stand
to win attractive cash prizes. All winners' works will be exhibited
with the prize presentation officiated by President S R Nathan.
To Singapore With Love, a photographic exhibition that
highlights the creative energies of Singaporeans is co-presented by
Singapore Art Museum and City Developments Limited.
Registration for the On-The-Spot Art Competition is open to all
schools as well as members of the public from 22 May 2005 only.

Talk: Brothers & Sisters

Teresa Hsu Chih is the oldest social worker in Singapore celebrating
her 107th birthday on 1 July. To celebrate this happy occasion and
to provide the public with a glimpse into her life, OneZeroSeven
Photography Exhibition was conceived. In this
pre-exhibition talk,
Teresa Hsu and Sharana Rao will
share their experience and joy of helping the poor and needy and Ray
Tan will speak about his experience of photographing Teresa.
About the speakers
Born in 1898 in Swatow, China, Teresa Hsu has worked in diverse
capacities in China, Hong Kong and Paraguay. In 1965, with the help
of her sister, she set up the Home for the Aged Sick in Singapore
and was its matron till her retirement in 1985.
Sharana Rao is a qualified osteopath, acupuncturist and yoga and
meditation instructor. He assists Teresa with the running of her
Heart To Heart Service.
Ray Tan is a freelance photographer who was awarded the top prize in
the Painted Faces, Present Memories photography
competition organised by the Singapore History Museum.
OneZeroSeven Photography Exhibition is held at The
Photographers' Gallery at MICA Building from 6-18 July 2005 and
features photographs of Teresa Hsu and her work in Singapore and
Vietnam.

conforming to the algorithm of classical Carnatic music are given a
new twist! Watch these multi-talented artists from alapana arts as
they switch effortlessly from dancing to playing the violin, from
playing the veena to singing. Be enthralled by the smooth percussion
skills displayed by the drummers as they try their hands on various
instruments. Be enchanted by a story, told through dance, of a grand
wedding ceremony in a black sparrow's home. Be treated to a
sensorial experience of music followed by a traditional Indian
vegetarian buffet dinner after the show.

Tang Da Wu and
his Performance Works: The Tiger's Whip
In conjunction with Art of Our Time: Unyielding Passions 每 8
Masters of Singapore Art exhibition

Since 1987, Koh Nguang How has been photographing Tang Da Wu's
performance art works and activities. In 1999, Koh co-curated the
exhibition, The Documentation of Tang Da Wu and His Works:
1970-1999, The Commemorative Exhibition for the 10th Fukuoka
Asian Culture Prizes, in Fukuoka, Japan, which was based on Koh's
own photographic documentation on Tang Da Wu.
Koh Nguang How is currently an independent researcher on Singapore
art. He was Assistant Curator in the National Museum Art Gallery
(1992) and also had an active career as an artist since 1988. His
work as a researcher became more formal with his appointment as
Researcher-in-Residence at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan
(1999), which led to further institutional collaboration projects.

the larger project, the sea stories, which his current work is
located in.
