Pioneer Singapore artist WU Tsai Yen died at his home in Rambutan Road on 5 Nov 2001 He was 91 years old. He was diagnosed with colon cancer some nine months ago when he went for a medical check-up. Mr WU is remembered as a master of the art of finger painting, a technique he took up at about the age of 30.

Mr WU leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Madam GAN Siew Bian, 81, and six children (two sons and four daughters).

Born in China's Fujian province in 1911, Mr WU was trained in traditional Chinese brush painting. He made Singapore his home in 1938.
