The Latchkey Kid is a 12,000-word short story set in the 80s in the heartland town of Nee Soon East. The story is about a teenage schoolboy named Yisheng who belongs to a neighbourhood school. I wrote it over the past three days. Hope you enjoy reading it just as I have enjoyed writing it for you, as well as for future generations of Singaporean children.

All my short stories feature happenings which span a period of four decades, from the 60s, through the 70s, 80s, and 90s. In the near future, I will be writing about characters whose lives unfold in the new millennium.

While this story is pure fiction, I have taken most of the names used in the story from real-life people I know.

For this reason, I wish to dedicate The Latchkey Kid to all the boys of Secondary 2E3 (2001) at Montfort Secondary School here in Singapore. If you desire a sequel to The Latchkey Kid, please e-mail me to let me know.
