Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.
A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.
Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Hallo everyone Yesterday was Children's Day. Primary School pupils in Singapore get a day off today in celebration of Children's Day. While there is good cause for celebration, many Singapore parents yesterday were too busy arranging for alternative care for their young children as the Ministry of the Environment has ordered all childcare centres and kindergartens in Singapore to be closed from today for at least a week or until further notice. What has happened is that two more children have died, possibly from hand, foot and mouth disease. In these latest cases, a 14-month-old girl and her 2˝-year-old brother died the day before yesterday. This brings to four the number of children who have died after being diagnosed with the same symptoms - vomiting, fever and rashes. About 140,000 children in 557 childcare centres and 440 kindergartens in Singapore are affected by the closure order. Parents have been advised to keep their children away from public places, like shopping centres and swimming pools. While everyone is susceptible to hand, foot and mouth disease, it affects mainly children below five. If you are an employer, Deputy Prime Minister LEE Hsien Loong has a message for you - he hopes you will be reasonable and understanding as parents will have to make alternative arrangements and there will be inconvenience. The government wants all fast-food restaurants, and other places where people gather, to close their play areas for children. It also wants all swimming pools and condominiums to shut their wadding pools until further notice. In addition, the hand, foot and mouth task force is asking all operators of enrichment centres, special schools, foreign schools and learning centres which cater to children five years old and younger to suspend their programmes.
A subsidised health-care programme for the elderly started yesterday. Elderly residents participating in the scheme pay just S$4 for a consultation with participating general practioners (GPs). The Health Ministry will reimburse participating GPs between S$17 and S$23 for each patient.
