Estimated population of Singapore citizens and permanent residents - 3,163,500 as at June 1998.

Chinese            77%

Malays             14%

Indians            7.6%

Other ethnic groups 1.4%

Working Language: English

Other official languages: Mandarin, Malay & Tamil.

Planners expect the population of Singapore to reach 5.5 million by 2040 or 2050, taking into account an expected increase in the number of foreigners working here. From just 3 million in 1990, the number has swelled to 3.9 million today, including 700,000 foreigners.

A high-level working committee is now looking at ways to encourage more couples to have babies. Demographer Saw Swee Hock says that if the fertility rate continues to stay below two, the population here, minus the foreigners, will peak at about 3.3 million in 2025 and then begin to drop.

Singapore's water is clean and safe to drink from the tap. There is no need to boil it.

Friday's News

The enterovirus 71 (EV71) has been found in samples taken from the bodies of both toddler siblings who died of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) last month. EV71 - one in a family of more than 80 viruses known to cause HFMD - is the same virus which killed more than 70 children in Taiwan in 1998 and three children in Malaysia in 1997. This was revealed by Public Health Commissioner WANG Nan Chee at a  press briefing yesterday.

Conservation guidelines have been relaxed, giving shophouse owners leeway to build rooftop gardens and rear extensions that verge on the avant-garde. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) also wants to get rid of unsightly air- conditioning units at the back of these heritage buildings. These are some of the 23 guideline revisions announced yesterday by a joint committee of the URA and the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA).

Archbishop Gregory YONG has stepped down as the head of the Catholic Church in Singapore after 23 years. 67-year-old Father Francis LAU was appointed administrator yesterday to look after the daily running of church matters until the Vatican names a new archbishop. There are 143,000 Catholics in Singapore. In accordance with Canon Law, Archbishop YONG submitted his resignation to the Pope when he celebrated his 75th birthday on 20 May 2000, said Father LAU.

Asia

Colombo: A suspected Tamil rebel suicide- bomber blew himself up, killing two people and wounding 21 others near President Chandrika Kumaratunga's residence here yesterday - just as the new Sri Lankan Cabinet was about to be sworn in.

Around the world

United Nations: After decades of opposing immigration, European countries have decided to review their policies in response to a UN report suggesting that increased migration might be needed to keep Europe's population from decreasing, the director of the UN Population Division said.
